Coup has developed in French, gaining numerous senses, participating in numerous phrases, such as coup d'état, and giving rise to many derivatives, including couper, "to divide with a blow, to cut." Couper yielded the word coupon, "a portion that is cut off," So, welding coupons are a portion cut off from the same metal you are practicing to

Where to buy coupon bender
09-22-2006, 01:00 AM. We have a coupon bender at school I'll have to wait till I go back on Monday to see if I can find a name on it. I know this thing should be able to bend up to one inch thick and it is also hydrollic driven. Chris. Comment.
Welding schools cancelled
Weld yer a$$ off, prep coupons cleanly, and pass lots of bend tests on your own. You can most certainly do it. Work for hours at a stretch, work often (welding is a perishable skill), MAKE SURE YOU CAN SEE (current eye exam, etc) and have lots of clear protective lenses for your helmet so you won't be looking through a haze.
What am I doing wrong
Got some 1/4" flat stock today, and was welding together some coupons. I am getting ZERO penetration, and its like the filler metal is just splashing onto the metal, but without even sinking in. Now keep in mind the metal is just a tad bit damp. dunked them in water so I …
Another Cooler update
I'm gonna go cut some coupons off the sheet and see how it edge welds. 24ga is tuff (read darn near impossible) for me to edge weld, I normally bend an edge around so that I can do a lap weld. Regards, George Hobart Handler 210 w/DP3035 - Great 240V small Mig Hobart Handler 140 - Great 120V Mig

Bend test with backing plate
Bend test with backing plate. 06-28-2006, 05:55 PM. When coupons are cut out for a bend test and it has a backing plate, is the backing plate ground off, or left on? The specific test is a 3/8" V-Groove 3G with 1/4" backing plate. I am very curious …
Everlast Welder I have seen the light!!!
The welder shut off, I quickly slipped the switch on it and unplugged it. Checked the breaker box and it had flipped. Turned it back on and checked the outlet with my grinder which worked fine. So reluctantly I plugged the Everlast back in and turned it back on. It immediately made a couple small pop noises to which I flipped it off immediately.
Help-1 code on new Dynasty
I've got about 36 1/8" steel coupons 2"x3" ready to go when I get back at the welding practice again. If the code does not come up on that batch I'll psychologically be able to write the problem off I guess. Well look at that - it's time to go home again where did the day go

Continuing Practice on 1/8" and 1/4" Aluminum
Personally, I think you're better off working with the "free" scrap you're getting. You're (from the photos)past just welding two strips of metal together. There's an old joke amonst us oldtimers that if you just practice on perfect, equal sized coupons, you'll get really good at "welding equal sized coupons" and not much good at welding

Which Chop Saw for under $200
I have been using a Harbor Freight 10" sliding compound miter saw and a 10" cut-off wheel as a chop saw. It's cumbersome to use and definitely time to get the real deal. Yes, I would love a cold saw or one of the Evolution EVO380 Raptor, Morse CSM14B, Milwaukee 6190-20, or Dewalt DW872 machines, but I don't have the $400 to $500 to spend on
Harbor Freight Bandsaw mods
Harbor Freight Bandsaw mods. 07-24-2005, 07:39 PM. So, I picked the $170 HF horiz/vert bandsaw. I can see how everyone's first mod is to make the stand less flimsy. However, my main concern is how easy it is for the blade to derail. If I give the work a bit too much pressure, the blade comes right off.

Make sure you grind or buff off all of the mill scale from the weld area before you put the parts together. I didn't do that, and when the coupons were bent to the root side there were a number of little spots where the plates joined the backup strip that opened a …
purging stainless pipe
Tweet. #3. 11-02-2012, 06:41 AM. Take a regulator off a machine your not using along with its hose, stick the hose in the pipe, and seal it off ( Foil tape will work ) Then cap the opposite end and put a hole in the cap about the size of your purge hose and keep it flowing while you weld. Comment.
Dirty MIG Wire
The coupons I have been practicing on are clean enough to Tig. I have tried adjusting the voltage + or - 1 volt around the recommended 17 volts and the wire speed between 245 and 190. I am running 75% Argon 25% CO2. I have also tried changing the gas flow + or - 5 cfh centered around the recommended 25 cfh.
Well once again work has to thrown a curve ball at me yesterday at 1:30 pm the QC comes by and drops two sets of coupons off on my tool box, one test is 6010/7018 2" SCH 160 and the other is SS TIG root and stick fill and cap. Once again, QC right back at ya passed both tests again. 17 years Have not missed a test or a X-ray weld yet.
Which Chop Saw for under $200
I gotta pick up some more lighting for my shed, so I'll have one more look at the Dewalt vs. Rigid while I'm at the big orange box (I admit I'm a sucker for their 10% off coupons). While I'm out, I'll have to drop by the other big box (Lowe's) and check out the Hitachi in person if it's in stock. I'll have to wait until Monday to find a Makita.

Then I put a couple of coupons that had some rust and mill scale on them in there and in about 3 minutes they were clean as a whistle I know it was good to take oil, rust, paint or whatever off and left the metal ready to paint. question about building a trailer
I've seen weld coupons signifigantly thicker than 1/4" done by very skilled welders that passed bend tests and etchings. V groved, preheat, multi pass, but the average owner of a 110v mig can't even hope to perform at those levels. As with all rules there are exceptions, I'm glad you are one. And definately yes, common sense isn't so common any
Trouble with welding square butt joints in school
When you prepare your "coupons" (the strips for bending), do you round the edges of the plate? Depending on the code that you're welding to, you may be able to round them with a 1/2 thickness radius. Also, some codes will allow the inspector to make a call as to whether the coupon cracked, beginning at the edge of it, and that a sharp edge
Using water submersion to keep work cool/straight
Not sure what brought the thought on - perhaps it was the youtube'r who was failing at keeping work from warping on long welds in thick materials. On an automotive forum I saw a guy who installed a roots supercharger on his BMW inline 6 shooter. To get the crank hub/pulley combo to work, he simply parted off the crank hub from
Hobart or Miller
My opinion. In that size machine no need to spend the extra money for a Miller. The Hobart machine will do him fine. They are a quality unit & can be purchased cheaper sometimes with store coupons such as at Tractor Supply which usually runs a 10% off every few months. As you have already found out they both have very good feedback from owners.
Problems with TIG weld quality on steel
Make sure the steel wool is wiped off, as well. With the proper amperage, it would only take a matter of seconds to fuse those rods together. If you can get some flat bar stock (2" wide) they make for great practice coupons. Keep in mind, if it's got mill scale on it, (like A-36) you'll have some issues as well. TIG doesn't like mill scale.
Same with plate postion welding, you would cut 2 from each position, horizontal, vertical and overhead and do bend tests on them. A lot of companies and construction jobs require you weld up "coupons" to prove you are a capable welder. Any shop with an ironworker machine should be able to run you off a bunch of 2x4 or 6 inch coupons easily.
RMD and Pro Pulse
An optimized solution is the RMD program on either the Axcess which is a wire feed only machine or the Pipepro 450 RFC. Both have RMD, the pro 450 has propulse and the axcess has accupulse as well as accucurve for aluminum and stainless. Accuspeed for high travel speeds (70 ipm+) Regular pulse, spray transfer and short arc.
Anyone adapted the 100 series spoolgun to the 175 yet
I was primarily playing with 1/8" flat bar coupons and also some 1/4" I had kicking around. I was running harbor freight 0.030 4043 wire and used a stainless wire brush (manual) for prep. On both the 1/8" and 1/4" the 175 w/ spoolmate was able to make great looking, good penetration welds with almost no spatter, tig looking at times.
-current @ 115 - 125 amps ( my coupons are 1/8" aluminum) - Pulse off - Frequency set at about 120 hz. I have tried above and below this but it seem to be best in this area - 5356 filler rod (3/32). I have 4043, but it looks terrible as I mentioned I have attempted both running beads on top of the material as well as fillet welds.
Anyone used a Victor *Gouging* tip
11-01-2009, 07:26 PM. I picked up a 118 series gouging tip and have no idea what pressures I should be running it at. All I know is cutting tip pressures and I've never used an actual gouging tip. If anyone can save me some time experimenting and/or pass along their recommendations, it would be a big help. Tip# is 2-1-118 if anyone's got a chart.
Welding wire strength in relation to base metals, weld
If I take two plates (or two sections of tubing) and do a butt joint (assume I grind down the plate edge/tubing edge to allow for full penetration of the weld), then section off a couple coupons, I'm aware of two tests for strength: one is where I bend the coupon to ensure it doesn't fail at the joint, the other is putting the coupon in tension
4043 vs 5356 on Dynasty 200
1. Both welds using 80% balance. Weld on the right is 4043 and the weld on the left is 5356. Also, there are black specs in the weld on the left. 2. Both welds are using 65% balance and 5356 filler. Weld on the right seems to be somewhat shinier than the weld …
Sour spec weld code
On 2" sch 40 I use 3/32and go just fast enough to fill a little below the bevel edge for the hot pass. On the bigger pipe you can use 1/8 as the pipe can handle more heat. I usually stop part way around to clean the slag off the start point , even if I can make a complete pass with one rod.
Finishing Tig weld
I welded up a handful of SS304 .125" x1" coupons this evening. I used the Maxstar 150 STL and a #17 torch w/o a remote. At the end of the weld I finished out the last of the puddle and dragged the torch onto a copper strip positioned at the end of my weld and pulled the arc off the copper strip.
