FAQ?

Do I pay sales tax out of State?

You generally collect your state's sales tax on orders placed from within or delivered to your own state. In most states, you should not collect local sales tax on out-of-state orders. If your out-of-state buyer places an order using their computer at home for delivery to another state, you do not collect your local sales tax.

Does sales tax apply for out of state sales?

Sales tax does not apply as long as the seller delivers the property to a location outside this State, or arranges shipment directly out of state to the customer by common or contract carrier. A copy of the sales slip and shipping invoice need to be retained showing that sale was shipped directly out of state.

Should I charge my customers out-of-state sales tax?

If you're a remote seller in an origin-based state, you may still have to charge out-of-state sales tax based on the tax rate of the destination state, but you may be able to simplify the calculation process by charging a flat-use tax rate. Contact the destination state's Department of Revenue to determine what, exactly, you're supposed to charge.

Should out-of-state retailers collect state sales taxes?

States now have the right to require tax collection from online retailers and other out-of-state retailers with no physical presence in their state if they meet certain economic thresholds. If an out-of-state retailer exceeds the threshold in a state with economic nexus legislation, they are required to register with the state and begin collecting tax.
